Life isn't fair doesn't necessarily mean you are being mistreated. Life isn't fair. It never has been. I had a 9 p.m. curfew all the way through high school. For my brother, it was midnight. By the time my sisters were in high school, I think Ma had given up on a curfew all together. If not, the curfew must have been, "Be home in a week." Life isn't fair. It never has been. My first accounting job was a bookkeper at a construction company. At bonus time, everyone got a bonus, but me. I'm not sure if it was because I was in a support position or because I was a woman. I was young and secure. I didn't ask. Life isn't fair. It never has been. When my oldest child was born, my husband worked out of town 275 days a year. That made me a single mom with a second income. I had no help with midnight feedings. Few days off and very little adult companionship--my friends all worked while I stayed home with my baby. Life isn't fair. It never has been. As an adult, I have never been on public assistance. I have never gone hungry. I have never known what it is to sleep on the streets. I know many have experienced all of these things. Life isn't fair. It never has been. Last year around this time, I became pregnant with twins. I didn't ask for twins. I didn't plan on twins. God blessed me with two little lives, two precious babies who smile when I talk to them. They were born healthy and happy. Thousands of women go through fertility treatments every day, praying for just one baby. Many will never have a child. I have three. Life isn't fair. It never has been. For every instance life is unfair to my chagrin, I can name an instance when life is unfair to my advantage. Maybe life is fair. About the Author Betsy Gallup is a full-time mother to an 11-year-old son, and infant twins. She has had several articles, essays, and short stories published.
